What is the recognition of foreign qualifications or diplomas?

A formal acknowledgement by a competent authority of the value of a foreign educational qualification with a view to access to educational and/or employment activities (Lisbon Convention, 1997).

Depending on the purpose, there are two types of recognition:

• Academic recognition of foreign qualifications - to continue education or work on non regulated profession;
• Professional recognition of foreign qualifications - to work in a regulated profession.
